I recently acquired Netflix aka I am on someone else’s account. I’ve been watching a lot of horror movies and I was able to catch up on a former favorite TV show (Supernatural). I also watched some new shows like Dark and Grace and Frankie. But, there was one show that stood out to me, Black Mirror. Now, I am not someone that jumps into all the hype about certain shows/things; still not ready to watch Stranger Things but, I heard about Black Mirror on YouTube and it sounded sick and twisted; right up my ally. I decided to give it a go. FYI, there are spoilers ahead.
I’m not going to lie, hearing about the first episode kind of piqued my interest in a good and bad way. I had to mentally prepare myself for what was going to come. The episode title “The National Anthem”, is about a Princess that was kidnapped and was being held captive. In order for her to be freed, the kidnapper wanted the Prime Minister to have __ with a pig on live television. Yes, you heard that correctly! The Prime Minister’s office tried everything they could to find the Princess and prevent the PM from having to do it. They tried tracking where the video was filmed; fail, hiring an actor to be the one to have ___ with the picture while digitally photo photoshopping the PM’s head onto his body, another fail, etc. So, it was getting down to the wire and the PM basically said fuck it. He was going to do it. He knew the consequences with the Royal family and the backlash from the people had he not. So, he did it. He had __ with a pig on live television for the whole country to see. The kicker is, they released the Princess 30 minutes before he was to go on television. The kidnapper knew that everyone would be glued to the TV, that’s why he released her early. Plus, the kidnapper ended up killing himself after it happened. Yes, that was crazy.
That wasn’t the craziest episode to me, but a lot of these episodes are physiological horror in nature and I noticed that they use advanced technology throughout the show.
I think the one that really hit home was the “Nosedive”. Let me give you a short version of it. You’re basically rated 1-5 by almost every person you encounter in life; think dating apps with an Instagram twist. This episode spoke to me because, with social media, we are always trying to put our best foot forward. Loads of people want others to think they have the perfect life or they’re this amazing person. We want likes and follows. We want people to be into us. Some people want to be in that desired, upper totem pole so much that they will do whatever they can to get there. Even trying to mooch off the popularity of others, which is what the main character was doing. Yes, everyone wants to feel important and liked but at what costs to your sanity. Towards the end, the main character’s status had gone significantly down. We’re talking, she was in the mid 4.0 to being at 0. I won’t spoil the end but, I will say there was a very important lesson to be learned. At least, in my perspective.
Overall, I like the show. I like the fact that all the episodes deal with different people and stories but, still have a little incorporation from a previous episode. The first 2 seasons are really short (3 episodes each). If you’re looking for something more on the twilight zone spectrum with a modern, technological twist, then this is definitely it. I’m holding onto that last episode because I am not ready for it to end yet. Hoping for a new season soon. If you’ve seen the show, what do you think of it?
